How to Help My High School Senior Make Friends

As a parent, it's difficult to watch your high school senior struggle to make friends. By the time your child is ready to graduate from high school, there are not a lot of social tools left to teach him. Everything that he has learned so far is what shapes him socially. However, that doesn't mean you need to stand idle on the sideline while he struggles to make friends. Act supportive and be there when he needs guidance.

Instructions

    • 1

Encourage her to join a school club or organization. You should know what your child enjoys doing, so suggest a club or organization that encompasses her interests. For example, if your child enjoys writing, tell her she should join the yearbook committee.

    • 2

Urge your child to apply for a job. A job provides your child with a way to earn money and also allows him to make friends without really trying to. The atmosphere of a job surrounds your child with other people, and it's unlikely the job will permit him to sit alone and not speak to anyone. He will be forced to talk to people and at least attempt to make friends.

Look for signs that your child lacks self-confidence and ask her if anything is wrong. Don't ask her why she can't make friends; that's the worst way to go about the subject. Simply asking if she's having trouble in school or if there's anything she needs to talk about will usually suffice. Your child may not think of herself positively, which can cause a serious problem when it comes to making friends.
