How to Calculate the Square Feet of Sheet Metal With SolidWorks

Dassault Systèmes' SolidWorks is a computer-aided design program for metal-working and other mechanical applications. When you view a sheet of metal from within SolidWorks, the program estimates its properties by creating a "bounding box" around it. This box is a parallelogram that surrounds the sheet and exceeds it in size. The latest versions of SolidWorks also offer a property that lists the sheet's area, ignoring portions of the bounding box that don't exist on the sheet.

  • Click the "+" sign next to "Cut list" in the Design Tree on the left side of the window.

  • Right-click "Cut-List-Item."

  • Click "Properties." This brings up a list of the sheet's properties.

  • Read the sheet's area, measured in square feet, from the "Bounding Box Area-Blank" entry.
