When your cat urinates on your furniture, you might find the odor lingers long after the spot itself is cleaned up. Whether your furniture is leather or upholstered, you can remove the smell of cat pee with the right products and methods.
Things You'll Need
- Glass or plastic bowl
- 4 cups hydrogen peroxide
- Baking soda
- 1 tbsp. bleach-free liquid dish soap
- Empty spray bottle
- Clean rags
- Leather conditioner
- 1 cup white vinegar
- Vacuum cleaner
Fill a glass or plastic bowl with 4 cups of hydrogen peroxide. Add ¼ cup of baking soda and 1 tbsp. of bleach-free liquid dish soap. Stir the mixture gently. Mixing peroxide and baking soda creates a lot of bubbles, so stirring too hard will cause it to overflow.
Pour the mixture into a clean, empty spray bottle. Mist the affected area of the leather furniture with the spray and let it sit there for a few minutes.
Blot up the excess moisture with a clean cloth. Let the leather furniture air-dry the rest of the way.
Apply a leather conditioner to the furniture, following the manufacturer's instructions, to restore any moisture lost during the cleaning process.
Pour 1 cup of white vinegar into a clean, empty spray bottle. Add 2 cups of warm water. Put the lid on the bottle and shake it up.
Wipe down the affected area of the upholstery with a damp cloth. Spray the affected area with the vinegar mixture so it's completely saturated. Let the liquid sit on the upholstery for a few minutes.
Blot the upholstery with a dry rag to absorb the excess moisture.
Sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda onto the smelly part of the upholstery. Leave it there overnight, then vacuum up the powder the next day.
Tips & Warnings
- If you've already cleaned up the urine and can't find exactly where the smell is coming from, use a black light to locate the spots. Turn off the lights in the room, and the black light will glow where the urine is located.
- Always test the products you are using on an inconspicuous area of the furniture before applying it to more noticeable areas
