Save money by installing your remote starter at home.

Even though the basic installation steps for a remote car starter are the same, the wiring tends to vary slightly, depending on the model you purchase. Make sure you follow each step of the directions included in your kit, so that you don't damage any electrical components in your car. Fortunately, the directions aren't difficult to understand, making it easy to do the installation from home.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the lever that unlatches the hood. Then lift and secure the vehicle's hood. Take the negative battery cable off the post. Set it aside so that it's not touching any metal.

    • 2

Drill holes in the metal close to the hood latch, for the hood pin switch. Included in your alarm kit, the hood pin switch is a safety device designed to keep the vehicle from starting when the hood is raised. After you drill the holes, fasten the hood pin switch using two six-inch bolts.

    • 3

Remove the panels covering the steering column and the heat duct -- located under the driver's side of the dashboard. Then, spread a small amount of rubber cement on the remote starter. Press and hold it to the inside of the heat duct, to secure it in place.

    • 4

Push the ground wire up through the heat duct and run it along the steering harness to the hood pin. Use wire crimpers to bind the ground wire to the hood pin.

    • 5

Solder the rest of the wires to the wires in the steering column. Refer to your kit's instructions to see where each wire goes. Since car starter kits vary, you'll have anywhere from one to three wires to attach. Use electrical tape to cover the exposed portions of the wires.

    • 6

Spread rubber cement along the bottom of the antenna. Then, mount it on top of the dashboard. Thread the antenna wire down behind the dashboard, through the heat duct, and plug it into the remote car starter.

    • 7

Put the panels back on the heat duct and the steering column. Replace the negative battery cable and close the hood of the vehicle.
