How to Seal Pool Pavers

Sealing pool pavers prevents fading and protects against water damage.

Pool pavers are exposed to water constantly. Sealing them prevents mold and weeds from growing and preserves their color longer. You don't need special tools or skills to apply sealant, and doing so makes the pavers easier to maintain. Use a top-quality sealant to reseal the pool pavers every two years.

Things You'll Need

• Stiff broom
• Power washer
• Degreaser
• Plastic cover
• Painter's tape
• Paint tray
• Sealant
• Paint roller or pump sprayer

Instructions

1. Remove all furniture and plants from the paver surface. Sweep the pool pavers with a stiff broom and clean them thoroughly, using a power washer and degreaser if necessary. Wait at least six hours for the pavers to dry.

2. Tape plastic covering over the metal pool coping and the first 5 inches of pipes and other permanent fixtures around the pavers.

3. Pour clear sealant into a paint tray and position it near the pool pavers. Dip a paint roller into the tray and roll sealant onto the entire roller.

4. Apply sealant onto the pavers with a roller, using a fluid motion to saturate the pavers. Begin at a corner of the paver surface and work your way out so you won't have to backtrack.

5. Wait six hours for the sealant to dry before walking on the pool pavers.

Tips & Warnings

• Some sealants can attract heat, which can be uncomfortable for bare feet. When selecting sealant, look for a product designed specifically for pool pavers.

• Roll sealant until coverage is even. Leaving puddles will create a residue. If you don't want to use a roller paintbrush, you can pour the sealant into a pump sprayer and spray it on instead.

• Refer to the sealant packaging for exact drying times and notes on when to reapply. Save the package or write down the name of the sealant you use. Avoid sealing pool pavers if temperatures are below 50 degrees Fahrenheit or rain is expected within 12 hours. Water and cool temperatures prevent sealant from drying properly.
