How to Input Data for Shipping & Receiving in a Handheld Computer
Most handheld computers used for importing shipping and receiving data operate using bar-code processing. Data is entered into the computer, such as the sender and receiver address details, and the package is given a bar code that can be scanned to keep track of it. The computer prints out bar codes for all items that are shipped and received. Many bar-code device manufacturers may provide training to use their products, as instructions may vary by brand.

Go to the website of your provider or contact them directly to set up a training session. Many providers require you to go to a training session with your handheld computer. This is because different service providers differ vastly in the use of their devices. In order to prevent error and ensure that your data is entered correctly and used efficiently, all users must be trained by a professional. Many providers, such as Sage, offer online courses and webinar training.

Set up the data that you will be printing a bar code for by selecting the bar-code format and the printer that you want to print from. This will depend on the make and model of your device. Some devices will be set to a default so they are always printed from a specified computer.

Select the data category for the information that you want to report. If you are recording an item to be shipped, simply enter as much information into the display boxes on the device as possible. For example, you will enter the name of the sender and recipient, the date that it is being sent, what department it is from and any other information that the device asks of you.

Click "Import" to import the information into the device and print off the bar code to attach to the device. You can scan the bar code at any time to find the information that you entered.

Perform the same steps when entering information that was received. Enter the details from the shipping and print off and attach the bar code. Any time that the information is needed, you can use the handheld computer device to track down the information that was entered and upload the data from any facility.
