How to Apply Tinted Glaze to Walls
Tinted wall glaze is a product you apply to a dry base coat of wall paint to give a previously plain wall a textured look. Although glazes come in latex or oil formats, you can only use oil glazes on oil-based base coats. Glazes are also sold untinted, so you will need to add pigment to your preferred glaze to achieve the color you want. Although you can match the glaze to the color of the base paint, for added impact, you can tint the glaze a completely different color to create contrast. Does this Spark an idea?

- 2 cans clear wall glaze
- 1 can wall pigment
- Paint stirrer
- Cheesecloth
- Paintbrush
- Texturizing tool of your choice

Open one can of wall glaze.

Slowly add the pigment to the glaze, stirring it with a paint stirrer as you do. When you achieve the color you desire, stop adding the pigment.

Open the second can of wall glaze.

Dip a piece of balled-up cheesecloth into the untinted can and apply a thin layer of the glaze to the wall in a 5-foot-wide section. This base will keep the wall moist, making it easier to work with as you apply the tinted glaze.

Paint a thin, even layer of the tinted glaze over the clear glaze you already applied.

Quickly press your texturizing tool into the wet tinted glaze to create the look you want. For example, you can use a second, clean piece of cheesecloth or a sponge to create a ragging pattern by pressing the item into the applied tinted glaze and removing portions of the color from the wall. Rumpled rags or pieces of plastic or newspaper can be used in the same manner to create a textured effect.

Move over to the next 5-foot section of the wall. Apply the clear glaze, then the tinted glaze, and then the texturizing tool in the same method you used in the first section. Repeat this step until you have applied the tinted glaze to the entire wall.

Let the wall dry according to the directions on the glaze package.
