How to Paint Wood Veneer Panels
Veneer is a thin plastic coating used to cover another surface, typically particle board. In addition to being used on furniture, veneer is also used on cabinetry and countertops. While the material cannot be stained like real wood, you can revive it with a new coat of paint. Surface preparation is key when covering veneer--because the material is very slick, paint will not stick to it without a good sanding. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Sand the veneer panel with 150-grit sandpaper. Rough up the surface enough to remove any shine, but not enough to expose the particle board or MDF beneath the veneer. Use a tack cloth to remove the dust particles left behind by sanding.

2
Clean the piece with an ammonia-based cleaner. Rinse the panel with clean water.

Apply a coat of bonding primer. Primer is available in spray cans or paint cans. If you choose a primer in a can, use a roller to apply it to avoid leaving brush marks or bristles behind as you go. Allow the primer to cure for at least two days.

4
Lightly sand the surface a second time using 220-grit sandpaper. Use a tack cloth to wipe away all dust particles.
-
5
Apply a coat of oil- or latex-based paint. Roll on paint in a thin coats--it is better to add multiple thin coats than one thick coat. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions regarding drying time to determine how long to wait between each paint coat.
