How to Use a Web IRC Client

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is the oldest form of "instant messaging" still in use on the Web. Although the actual number of Internet Relay Chat users is unknown because of the anonymity enjoyed by IRC users--when compared to other instant messaging methods--there are still more than 5,000 active and thriving IRC networks. Traditionally, connecting to an IRC server meant downloading and installing difficult-to-configure software, but modern IRC Web client technology enables surfers to chat with friends and strangers using nothing more than a browser.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to a website that allows visitors to access chat channels and networks using a Web IRC client. Sites like Freenode IRC, Mibbit, XS4All Webchat all provide IRC chat users with simple to use interfaces that require no software downloads (see Resources).

    • 2

Click the "Chat Now" or "Launch Chat" link if needed to access the IRC Web client application. Some Web IRC client sites have the application on the home page of the site, while others require you to click a link to access the chat client.

    • 3

Enter a user name in the "Nickname" field or leave the computer-generated name in place. Enter an IRC server name in the "Server" field or select one from the drop-down list.

    • 4

Enter the "Channel" number to connect to a specific chat room on the IRC server. If you do not know the channel number, leave the field blank. If you leave the channel field blank, you will connect to the default chat room on the server. Usually, this is the "Lounge" or "Waiting Room" where chatters meet before entering private chats in specific IRC server channels.

    • 5

Click the "Connect," "Go" or "Join Chat" to log into and join the IRC chat session on the selected server.

    • 6

Enter text in the chat window. Press the "Enter" key to send the message and make it visible to others in the IRC chat room. Replies and messages from other Web IRC client users display in the browser.

Tips & Warnings
