How to Put a Quilt on the Grace Z44 Professional Fabri-Fast Quilting Frame

A quilting frame can make hand quilting much easier by spreading the quilt out and holding it in place while you quilt on it. The most challenging part of this operation may be putting the quilting frame together and putting the quilt on the frame. The Grace Professional Z44 Fabri-Fast Edition Hand Quilting frame includes professional series rails or poles to make putting your quilt on the frame an easier experience. The quilt's backing, batting and top are all mounted on poles with the use of cloth leaders.

Instructions

    • 1

Find the middle of each cloth leader with a measuring tape and mark it. Align the middle of the cloth leader with the middle of the front, middle and back frame poles. Roll a cloth leader onto each pole, leaving a few inches free. Mark the middle of the backing and pin it to the middle of the cloth leader on the front pole with the wrong side facing up. Lay the backing across the front pole and attach it to the cloth leader with a few more pins.

    • 2

Pin a cloth leader to the other end of the backing and pin the backing to the middle pole. Ensure that the middle of the backing and the pole line up; there should be equal amounts of the middle pole showing at either side of the backing. Roll the backing onto the middle pole until there is little slack in the material and no bumps or wrinkles.

    • 3

Pin the batting over the backing, making sure it is centered and straight. Drape it over the middle pole and let it hang down between the middle pole and the fourth pole.

    • 4

Pin the quilt top to the center of the cloth leader on the front pole and then pin the quilt top to the batting and backing. Drape the quilt top over the middle pole and let it hang down between the middle pole and back pole. Pin the centers of the cloth leader on the back pole and on the quilt top together. Pin these pieces together at each corner. Roll the batting end onto the fourth pole.

Ensure that all pieces are straight on each pole by measuring the amount of pole showing on either sides of the material on the front and back poles. Smooth the material and use the cog wheels to roll the quilt onto the frame. Apply the cog stop when you are ready to quilt. Undo the cog stop and roll the quilt to the next section to be stitched and then reapply the cog stop.
