Starting Problems in a 1995 BMW 325i
The components of the ignition system in your BMW 325i can wear down and require replacement. You may also experience problems starting your 325i during the winter, when freezing temperatures and changes in humidity can cause issues in your ignition and fuel system. Finding out why the car is having trouble starting can become a guessing game unless you diagnose the most likely problems ahead of any other potential failing parts.

1
Define the issues that your car is having. Does the car just continually click when you try to start it? Does the car start, but idle roughly? Or perhaps the car starts, idles and then dies.

2
Check the connections to the battery. The battery is located underneath a plastic cover in the passenger-side of your 325i trunk. Ensure that both the positive and negative terminals of the battery are tightly connected. A loose electrical connection can cause issues starting the car and maintaining the engine's operation once the ignition has been sparked. Check the fluid level on the side of the battery and look for any other indicators of its date of manufacture, as the battery could also just be old and used up.

3
Open your 325i hood and check the connections to the fuel injectors and spark plugs. Remove the plastic engine cover to gain access to the fuel injectors, ignition coils and spark plugs. Each spark plug sits directly underneath the fuel injectors. If you are appropriately equipped, remove each spark plug and inspect it for a gray soot-like material on the bottom, sparking end. If it looks black and is covered in soot, then your spark plugs likely need to be replaced.
-
4
Inspect the fuel rail on your 325i, which sits directly at the top of the engine above the fuel injectors. Run your fingers along the side of the fuel rail, which is a thin rectangular piece that runs the length of the engine, and check for any trace amounts of fuel that may be leaking out. If you do detect gasoline inside the engine bay, you could have a leak somewhere in your fuel system that is causing the issues starting.

5
Test the fuel injectors of your 325i by bringing the car to a licensed mechanic or dealership who have fuel injector testing equipment onsite. By testing the dynamic flow of fluids through the injectors, you can determine if one or more of the injectors have become contaminated and clogged, which would require their cleaning or full replacement, depending on the severity of the clog.
