How to Cash a Check With Two Names on It

Cashing a check with two names on it can be done in one of two main different ways depending on how the names are written out. If the issuer of the check lists the names with the word “or” in between them or the names are listed separately, one to each line, then either person may cash the check, without the other’s permission. If the check lists the names with the word “and” or a “&” sign in between the names, then both parties must endorse (sign) the back of the check to cash the check.

  • Pen

1 “OR” in Between

2 Needs to sign the back

One of the parties needs to sign the back of the check on the left hand side along the line labeled “Endorse Here.” Sign the check exactly as the name is listed on the front of the check. For example, if you normally sign with your middle initial, but the check does not have your middle initial in your name, then do not include your middle initial while signing the back of the check.

3 Present the check to a bank teller

Present the check to a bank teller either at your local bank or at the bank the check was issued from.

6 Sign the back

Both parties must sign the back of the check. The first person listed on the check should sign first above the “Endorse Here” line on the back of the check. The second person listed should sign underneath that also above the “Endorse Here” line. Sign the back of the check as the names on the front appear. If you normally sign your name with a middle initial and the check does not list a middle initial, then be sure to leave out the middle initial when signing the check.

7 Present the check

Present the check to a bank teller either at your local bank or the bank where the check was issued from.

  • Each bank is different in its polices and rules when it comes to cashing checks with more than one name. Even though legally when the word “or” or each name appears on a separate line the check can be cashed, your bank may require more. You may want to call ahead of time to see if the bank will require you to come inside the branch, with both persons being present, and/or provide proper photo ID to complete the transaction.
  • If more than 50 cents will be given in addition to paper bills when cashing the check, then go inside the bank rather than through a drive-through teller. Some bank tunnel machines that transport cash and other transactions from the teller to the car cannot handle large amounts of coins in the container.
