When you spill red wine on the sofa or your favorite upholstered furniture, you may think the piece is ruined unless you have it professionally cleaned. You can clean the spill yourself, however. Whether the stain is fresh or dried on the upholstery will determine the cleaning method.
Things You'll Need
- Soda water or white wine
- White terry cloth towels
- Paper towels
- Stack of books
- Vacuum cleaner
Set In Stains
Pour soda water or white wine over the red wine stain.
Blot the area with clean terry cloth towels.
Repeat the process until the towels no longer absorb any color from the spill.
Cover the area with a thick stack of paper towels.
Place a heavy stack of books over the paper towels and allow the paper towels to absorb the excess moisture overnight.
Remove the books and paper towels and allow the upholstered fabric to finish air-drying before using the furniture.
Pour a generous amount of salt over the spill.
Allow the salt to absorb the red wine.
Vacuum away the salt as it changes color and becomes wet. Apply more salt, if needed to continue to absorb the wine.
Clear away the discolored salt. Apply more salt to the spill and allow it to sit overnight.
Vacuum the remaining salt from the spill.
Tips & Warnings
- The sooner you deal with the spill, the easier it is to remove the wine color from the fabric.
- If you have bottled stain remover, you can use that to remove the red wine also. Mix the remover following label instructions and test it on an unseen area to ensure it will not discolor the fabric.
