The 2007 Mazda 6's center console surrounds the car's gearshift and includes a cup holder and storage compartment/armrest. To make many interior modifications, including the installation of an aftermarket amplifier, you must likely remove the center console to run wires beneath it. Other reasons for removing the console include making modifications to the interior, such as replacing the Mazda 6's carpet or removing it to prepare for detailing.
Things You'll Need
- Wrench or pliers
- Phillips screwdriver
Shut off the Mazda 6's engine, and open the hood. Locate the battery in the driver-side front corner of the engine compartment. Lift the plastic battery cover to access the battery cables. Use a wrench or pliers to turn the metal nut around the negative battery cable. Lift the cable to disconnect the battery.
Set the parking brake for safety. Grasp the shift knob and twist it counterclockwise to remove it from the shifter. Open the cup holder compartment in the console.
Grasp the base of the gearshift surround panel with one hand. With the other, grasp the section surrounding the cup holder. Pull upward firmly to unhook the center console's trim panel. Slide it up and over the shifter to remove it.
Remove the two screws from the front edge of the center console with a Phillips screwdriver. (These screws are visible with the trim panel removed.)
Pull off the two circular screw covers on the front edge of the center console (you'll find one on each side). Remove the screws behind these covers with a Phillips screwdriver.
Open the center console storage. On the storage floor, you'll find two screws. Remove them with a Phillips screwdriver. Grasp the entire console, and lift it up to remove it from the floorboard. Slide it forward and then upward to maneuver it around the parking brake lever.
Tips & Warnings
- When reinstalling the center console, simply follow the removal process in reverse. Don't lose the screws, or the console will not reattach correctly.
