Instructions

    • 1

Locate the breaker box in your basement and turn off the breaker for your bathroom. Try to turn on the fluorescent light switch to ensure you turned off the correct breaker.

    • 2

Remove the fluorescent light cover from the base of the fixture. This procedure will vary depending on the style of light you own. Lights with long tube fluorescent bulbs usually require you to press in on the sides of the light cover and pull down. If the light uses round bulbs, the light cover is probably secured into place with thumb screws positioned around the outside edge of the cover.

    • 3

Remove the light bulbs from the fixture. If you have long tube fluorescent bulbs, twist the bulbs to remove them from their connectors. If the bulb is round, unplug the electrical connector and pull the bulb out of its retaining brackets.

    • 4

Remove the screws that secure the base plate to the ceiling or wall with a screwdriver and pull the light fixture down to expose the wiring.

    • 5

Remove the screw that secures the ground wire to the fixture and then disconnect the wires that connect to the ballast. Place the light fixture off to the side.

    • 6

Twist the two wires still in the ceiling or wall together with a wire nut and then tape the wire nut to the wires with electrical tape. This prevents the wires from accidentally touching a grounded surface until you install the new light. If you are immediately installing a new light, you can forgo this step.
