How to Calculate the Volume of Gumballs

The radius of the gum ball is half the diameter.

If you are calculating the volume of a gum ball, you are looking at how much room the gum ball takes up. Gum balls are spheres, so you need to find the volume of a sphere for the individual gum balls and then add together their individual volumes to find the total volume. The formula for volume of a sphere is 4/3 times pi times the radius cubed. Pi is rounded to 3.14.

Instructions

1. Measure the diameter of the gum ball. This is the widest part of a gum ball. For example, assume a gum ball has a diameter of one inch.

2. Divide the diameter in half to calculate the radius. In the example, one inch divided by two equals 0.5 inches.

3. Cube the radius. This means multiply the radius by itself three times. Therefore, in the example, 0.5 cubed equals 0.125.

4. Multiply the result in Step 3 by pi, then 4/3. In the example, 0.125 times 3.14 times 4/3 equals a volume of 0.5233 cubic inches.
