Write an Introduction for an Essay
The moment when you stop your research and begin writing your essay is daunting, and it is tempting to put it off and just continue reading and taking notes for a little longer. However, you will feel much better when you have begun your essay. Most people feel that the introduction is not only scary, but also a vital part of the whole essay. This is true. How you begin and finish your essay is important, so you do need to make the best start possible. You need to decide what to include and what to leave out of your introduction.

Aim to make the first sentence as sparkling and attention grabbing as you can. If you can begin with a surprising finding or fact, do this. However, do not become so preoccupied with providing the perfect first sentence that this holds back your progress. Set the theme of what you are going to write about, but be careful not to go into much detail. It is permissible to start with an anecdote, as long as it is in keeping with the subject matter of the essay.

2
Write a fairly short introduction, particularly if there is a tight word limit for the essay. It is not unusual for an inexperienced academic to get too immersed in the introduction. You should aim to set the scene for what is to come, not give lengthy explanations. Keep your tone light, and make sure that the sentences flow well, and that the spelling and grammar are faultless.

Aim to have a seamless flow between the opening paragraph and the rest of the essay. Check your essay plan and notes frequently to ensure that you do not include something in your introduction that you never mention again. It is important to link the beginning with the main body of the essay and to relate the conclusion to all that has gone before.
