How to Grow Evergreens Quickly

How to Grow Evergreens Quickly thumbnail
Proper planting and follow up care is essential for quick evergreen growth.

Evergreen trees are widely grown as home and commercial landscaping as they maintain their green needles and leaves throughout the year. Many evergreens are fairly slow growing. Consider choosing a Norway spruce, Eastern white pine or Chinese juniper -- medium- to fast-growing evergreens -- for quicker results. In addition to choosing the right variety of evergreen, the amount of time an evergreen requires to mature into an attractive tree can be shortened by proper soil preparation and follow-up care. Instructions

    • 1

Choose a location for planting the evergreen that will receive full sun. Select a planting site with soil that will easily drain. Plant evergreen trees in the fall or early spring following the last frost.

    • 2

Remove all grass, weeds and other ground cover from the area where the evergreen will be planted. Scoop grass and weeds from an area that is at least 2 feet in diameter.

    • 3

Loosen the soil with the shovel. Work the soil loose by digging and turning with the shovel until there are no large clumps of dirt remaining.

    • 4

Add two shovelfuls of humus to the soil. Turn the soil as before with the shovel to incorporate the humus into the dirt.

    • 5

Push the blade of the shovel into the prepared soil. Work the shovel back and forth to create a trench that is about 1 foot deep. Place the evergreen into the trench and and adjust the position so that the top of the root ball is level with the ground.

    • 6

Pour 1 to 1 1/2 quarts of water around the evergreen but do not over water and saturate the soil. Pull the dirt around the root ball of the evergreen. Press the dirt down firmly around the root of the evergreen with your foot to hold the plant firmly in place.

    • 7

Form a ring of dirt around the trunk of the evergreen. Shape the ring 1 foot away from the base of the evergreen to help with water retention.

    • 8

Monitor the growth of the evergreen and add 12-12-12 fertilizer if the plant shows signs of losing its healthy dark green color. Add 1 tbsp. of fertilizer to the soil around the evergreen and do not place the fertilizer directly on or next to the trunk of the evergreen.
