How to Paint Stitching

If fast and simple projects that look like you spent hours working fit your lifestyle, paint stitching may be the craft for you. With fabric paint dots that slightly resemble cross-stitch patterns, you can create attractive paint stitch patterns in a variety of colors and designs. Paint stitch on pillows, wall hangings, clothing and placemats. Once you see how quickly you can finish paint stitch creations, you may never thread another needle for decorative stitching.

Things You'll Need

  • Fabric (with printed paint stitch pattern)
  • Paper towel
  • Fabric paints (in tubes)
  • Purchase one tube of fabric paint for each color required for the pattern. Consult the color key on the pattern to see the colors you need.

  • Select a color to start with. Choose a color with a large section to begin filling in colors on the fabric.

  • Open the paint tube and shake the tube so paint comes down to the end of the nozzle.

  • Squeeze a test dot of paint onto the paper towel to ensure the paint comes out of the tube properly.

  • Make a dot of paint to fill a square on the fabric. Squeeze the paint tube just hard enough to exude a round dot of paint that fills the square.

  • Repeat the same process to fill the entire section with dots of the same color. Work with the same color until you fill every dot for that color.

  • Switch to a different paint color and fill another section of the design with dots of a different color.

  • Continue working until you fill the entire pattern with paint dots.

  • Lay the fabric on a flat surface and allow the paint to dry undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours.

  • Use the fabric to make a pillow, a wall hanging or another decorator project.
