1
Base the writing sample you submit to a particular journal with the type of writing styles the journal typically publishes. For example, do not submit a memoir piece to a journal that strictly publishes essays. If you have access to the literary journal's website or sample copies, check the general length and style of works that are being published by the journal.
-
2
Double space the text of the piece you plan to submit to the literary journal. Anything you submit, whether via email or regular mail, will need to be typed out and double spaced.
-
-
3
Put the text in a readable, classic font size and style. Times New Roman, for example, is an accepted classic. Usually 10- to 12-point font is needed to be readable.
-
4
Set your margins to a standard size. A 1-inch margin all around is generally the most standard format for writing for literary journals.
-
5
Submit a cover letter along with your story or essay. The cover letter should include your name and contact information and be addressed to a specific person, such as the editor, if possible. In the first paragraph, explain briefly that you're submitting content for consideration. In the second paragraph, list writing credits if you have any. Sign your name.
