How to Recycle Kennametal Carbide

How to Recycle Kennametal Carbide thumbnail
Carbide recycling reduces mining and consequent environmental damage.

"Tungsten prices rose threefold in 2005, from US85 to US260/tonne, and China accounts for around 80 per cent of annual production," says the Machinery website. Consequent fears about world tungsten carbide supply, along with environmental concerns, according to Kennametal, led it to increase its carbide recycling efforts in 2005. The company implemented an easier web-enabled program, giving worldwide access to companies interested in recycling their carbide materials for financial incentives or replacement tools. Regardless of the size of your operation, consider following a few simple guidelines to recycle your carbide and increase company profits while benefiting the environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill in Kennametal's online form to obtain a quote for your unwanted carbide. You will need to fill in your company details and the weight in pounds of used inserts, straight grade and other scrap carbide that you are sending for recycling. Along with your quote, you will be sent a confirmation number and shipping information.

    • 2

Ship your carbide to Kennametal in closed metal containers. Each container must contain no more than 1,000 lbs. of material and, if you want to recycle more than 5,000 lbs. of carbide with Kennametal in any one month, you need to contact them for approval and instructions. Put your confirmation number on the packing list and bill of lading. Also include it on all shipping papers, correspondence and containers.

    • 3

Send your carbide as soon as you can after you have received your online quote. Kennametal will honor quotes for up to 30 days but has the right to change their offer after that period. They will verify the weight of recycleable carbide on receipt of your shipment and pay you accordingly. Their determination is final. You should be paid within 30 days if you send your carbide to Henderson, NC, and within 45 days if you send it to their base at Fallon, NV.

Tips & Warnings

  • Kennametal accepts coated and non-coated items, including carbide inserts, drills, reamers and taps. Mixed carbide lots receive a lower price due to the extra processing time. Kennametal sells environmentally safe containers for shipping, if required. If you want to receive compensation for your recycled carbide in reduced invoices for Kennametal products, or in replacement tools, contact Kennametal for more information. Kennametal will recycle any carbide as long as its terms and conditions are adhered to. It does not just recycle Kennametal carbide products.

  • All materials you send must be free of contamination, including swarf and oil braze, as well as ceramics, cermets and steel. Hazardous materials must not be sent to Kennametal. Materials that do not conform to the regulations, or are considered defective, will be returned or disposed of at the sender's expense. Read Kennametal's full terms and conditions for their recycling program before sending materials.
