How to Select Flowers for a Flower Bed
Flower gardens need to be planned in advance so the plantings thrive and look aesthetically pleasing. Flower gardens can be created in nearly any environment and can be planted to attract bees or butterflies, for use in flower arrangements or to mimic a field of wildflowers. Choose flowers based on the location that you will be growing them. Consider the soil type and how much sun they will be getting. Consult gardening books and talk to local garden experts. Your local greenhouse staff will know about varieties that thrive in your region.

Narrow down your choices by color. You can select flowers for your garden based on bloom color by picking one or two colors to feature. Choose a monochromatic theme by choosing flowers that bloom in the same color; flowers in contrasting or complementary colors also make attractive displays.

Select flowering plants based on bloom times. Flowers bloom at different times of the year and will last different lengths of time. You can choose flowers that bloom around the same time so the garden looks the fullest. For a display that lasts the longest time in your yard, stagger blooming time -- select some flowers that bloom in early spring, spring, summer, mid-summer and fall.

Determine how much time you want to put into your garden. Annual flowers need to be replanted every year, but bloom for many weeks. Perennial flowers and bulbs come up every year, but bloom for a shorter period of time.

Sketch out your garden and make a plan for where you want your flowers to grow. Put the tallest ones in the back and the shorter ones up front. Some flowers grow along the ground and work well for filler in the front. At this point, you may decide to add more flowers for filler or that you have too many varieties.
