How to Make Hebrew Costumes

How to Make Hebrew Costumes thumbnail
Costumes make Hebrew characters come alive for children

One of the amazing aspects of the Bible is its rich array of well-developed Hebrew characters, with enough depth to fascinate scholars yet simple enough for even children to relate to. Making costumes and plays out of these characters are ways to make these figures come alive for younger people. The materials for most characters are readily available, and some specific props (a staff, for example) can elevate an anonymous shepherd to Moses, leader of the Israelites.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a Biblical character for your costume. Most of the ancient Hebrew costumes consist of the same material, with minor accents to distinguish between a wise man and a simple shepherd.

    • 2

Put on the long T-shirt or robe; this can be done over regular street clothes for convenience and comfort.

    • 3

Wrap the pillow case or large square piece of cloth around the head and fasten it in place using a piece of long cloth or a headband.

    • 4

Wrap the colored sash around the waist or torso to add some color and distinction to the character.

    • 5

Add a distinctive prop to accentuate special characters, such as a staff for Moses, a crown for Esther, and so on.
