How to Make Your Own Custom Doorknob Hanger
Doorknob hangers are signs that have an opening so they can be hung around a doorknob. Create doorknob hangers to hang your business advertisement on doors in your neighborhood or customize hangers for your home as part of your holiday decorating scheme. Older children enjoy decorating their own doorknob hangers to show ownership of their bedrooms. You can make signs to hang outside the bathroom door to give others a warning that it is occupied.
Things You'll Need
- Ruler
- Colored thick paper or card stock
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Foam board
- Glue
- Stickers
- Markers
- Glitter or rhinestones, optional

Measure the diameter of the surface of the doorknob. At the center and near the top of a sheet of thick paper or card stock, draw a circle that is at least ½ inch larger than the doorknob diameter.

Draw any shape around the circle to create the outline of the doorknob hanger. Sketch a rectangle or circle that extends down to the bottom so you have a place to add a note or embellishments. For an animal shape, the head is the doorknob and the body extends below.

Cut the hanger out around the outer line. Cut out the center circle. Cut a small slit in the top or bottom of the doorknob opening to aid in hanging the sign without tearing the paper.

Draw or trace designs onto the foam board, such as letters, flowers, geometric shapes or zigzag lines for bordering. Cut out the shapes and glue them to the hanger. Stickers can be used instead of foam shapes.

If desired, write a message on the bottom of the hanger, such as "Occupied," "Mom's room" or information about your business. Decorate the sign with glitter or rhinestones, if desired, to add flair.

Tips & Warnings
Most doorknobs are a standard size, so if you are making a doorknob hanger but cannot measure the door, the average doorknob surface diameter is 2.25 inches.
Design your hanger on a computer and print it out for a more professional appearance. Use a free template available online for the base of your doorknob hanger and customize according to your design, if desired.
Do not attach small objects to the hanger that could fall off, as this is a choking hazard for children and pets.
