How to Get a Retail Business License
After you have researched your market, written a plan, secured financing and chosen a location for your retail business, it is likely that you still require an operating license before you can open your doors. Retail business licensing requirements and procedures vary widely depending on both the type of product you are selling and the city and state you are selling it in. Therefore, your first step in meeting local retail licensing standards is to identify both your city and state business licensing authorities.

1
Visit the U.S. government's business information website and access the Business Licenses & Permits search tool (see References). Enter your zip code and select your business type. If your business type is not available on the drop-down list, choose "General Licensing." Click "Search." The tool will return a detailed list of resources specific to your location, including links to state licensing boards, standard registration forms and contact information for city and county authorities. Read through all of the material, but pay special attention to the "Business Licenses" section. Visit the websites of your local licensing authority and research local requirements and procedures. Take careful notes, including telephone numbers and addresses, so that you can contact a customer service representative in person should you need to. Additionally, be sure to print out any important documents that you find, such as license applications and registration forms.

Visit the business development office, chamber of commerce or City Hall in your city. Sit down with a representative and go over the business licensing requirements as you understand them from your research. Ask for advice. When you are satisfied that you have all the necessary information and all the required documents, begin preparing your license application materials.

Register with federal and local tax authorities if you have not yet done so. Many states require you to include your tax identification numbers on your business license application. Visit the IRS website to obtain a Federal Employer Identification Number online (see Resources). Similarly, many states maintain online tax registration tools, usually available on the Department of Revenue's website. Visit your state's section on the Business website for a direct link to your state's registration tool.

4
Complete your application. Submit it, along with any supporting documentation and fees, to the indicated address. Often, a review of your application can take as many as 10 business days or more. Plan your business opening accordingly. Upon approval, a retail business license will be issued to you as local procedure requires. Display your license at your place of business in a conspicuous place, if you are so required.
