How to Make a Key Ring Bracelet With Horsehair

How to Make a Key Ring Bracelet With Horsehair thumbnail
Horsehair is prized all over the world.

Authentic horsehair is a traditional part of Western-style craftwork. For a bracelet keychain, a softer horsehair from the mane will feel more comfortable against the skin. Many craft stores and online vendors sell horsehair in various colors. A key-ring bracelet is a manageable craft for all ages. Consider including it as a craft in a Western-themed event or birthday party.

Instructions

  1. Prepare Horsehair

    • 1

Select colors of horsehair that complement each other. Both dyed and undyed horsehair work equally well for this project, and dyed horsehair is usually slightly more thin and soft. Children have an easier time braiding if the three strands are different colors.

    • 2

Cut the horsehair into sections about a foot long; you'll trim off the excess later.

    • 3

Make a small knot at both ends of each section of hair.

    • 4

Tie three strands together into a knot at one end. Separate each strand and lay it flat on the surface on which you're working. Ask someone to hold the knotted end or put it under a heavy object to hold it still.

    • 5

Cross the right strand over the middle strand, then the left strand over the new middle strand. Repeat, pulling the strands snug each time so the braid is tight. Tie a knot at the end when the braid is finished.

    • 6

Wrap the braid around the wrist of the person you are making the bracelet key chain for and tie the two ends together so the hand has enough room to move in and out.

    • 7

Thread the entire bracelet through a metal key-chain loop.

    • 8

Cut a footlong section of horsehair and hold it all together in one bunch.

    • 9

Tie a series of knots every inch or so to hold the horsehair together. This is sometimes a better option for small children or for a different look than a braid.

    • 10

Tie the entire section into a circle large enough to slide onto a person's wrist, then thread it through a metal keychain loop.
