How to Disable the Traction Control of a Silverado LS

The Chevrolet Silverado comes in several trim levels, including LS, LT, LTZ and SS. All of the Silverado trim levels come standard with GM's traction control system, which is officially referred to as "Stabilitrak." This system is enabled by default. However, you can disable it for the present driving cycle if you need to spin the tires for some reason (e.g., if you are stuck). The traction control is re-enabled when you turn the truck off and then back on. If you want to keep the traction control disabled, you'll need to disable it each time you start the engine.

  • Start the Silverado LS engine and sit in the cabin. Turn your attention to the center of the dashboard, near the radio.

  • Look beneath the radio to find the climate control switches, and then look beneath the climate control switches to find the "Traction Control" button. The button shows a car losing control with a line through it.

  • Push the "Traction Control" button to disable the system. You'll see "Trac Off" in the instrument cluster.

  • Push the button again to re-enable the system, or simply turn the engine off and then back on.
