How to Ignite a Gas Barbecue Grill
Lighting a gas barbecue grill is an easy process with today's modern ignition systems. They create a spark that lights the front burner of the grill first, and you can turn on other burners as needed for your recipe. Even if your ignition system isn't working, or if your grill doesn't have one, there are ways to get your gas grill fired up with things you may have on hand. Does this Spark an idea?

Lighting a Grill With an Ignition System
-
1
Open the lid of the grill and ensure all the burner controls are in the "Off" position. Do this by pushing them in and turning clockwise as far as they can go.
-
2
Turn on the propane tank by reaching down to the valve at the top of the tank. Turn it slowly counterclockwise one full turn.
-
-
3
Turn the front burner control to "Start", "Ignite" or "High," depending on the model of your grill. Do this by pushing in and turning the knob counterclockwise.
-
4
Press the ignition or starter button until the burner lights. Some brands require you to push the button once for every click. If you have this type, push it several times until the burner lights. If you have the other kind, push the burner once and the ignition system will keep clicking until you let go. If you have this type, hold it down for several clicks or until the burner lights. If the burner is not igniting, turn it all the way to "Off" and wait five minutes before trying again, recommends the Char-Broil Product Guide.

Light the long-stemmed match or butane lighter.

9
Use a long-handled butane lighter. Place the flame of the match or lighter up into the match-light hole and hold it there.

Turn the front burner to "High" by pushing it in and turning the knob counterclockwise. The burner should light immediately. If the burner does not light, turn it off, wait five minutes for gas to dissipate, then try again, recommends Char-Broil.

Tips & Warnings
If your gas barbecue grill won't light, you may be out of gas. You will have to fill your propane tank before using the grill.
Do not lean your head over the grill while lighting it. A flare-up can cause severe burns.
Never try to use a grill that has a full tank but is not lighting properly. Clogged fuel lines or leaks can cause an explosion.
