How to Evaluate a Process by Indirect Evaluation
An evaluation of a process is a tool used to determine validity and reliability of a task or project. To measure a process by indirect evaluation, a manager or executive must focus on the strategies for indirect evaluation or assessment. Identifying the strategies for indirect evaluation enables a human resources specialist or training and development specialist to take appropriate steps or procedures in evaluating a process. The steps taken to act out the strategies result in data collection, which is used to evaluate processes.

1
Conduct surveys. Surveys can be developed online, sent via email, distributed in classroom environments or mailed to individuals. Sturveys consist of both open-ended and closed-ended questions. Open-ended questions, also called unstructured questions, allow respondents to express themselves -- with questions that begin with "why," "what," "when," "where" and "how." Closed-ended questions, also called structured questions, provide a selection of answers, such as multiple-choice answers, for respondents. Form conclusions from the data collected during surveys.

2
Conduct interviews. Structured or unstructured interviews can be conducted face-to-face, over the phone or in groups. A structured interview involves closed-ended questions, in which an interviewee is required to choose from a specific set of answers to questions, and an unstructured interview is a more open process, whereas the interviewee answers questions in his own words.

3
Facilitate a focus group. Focus groups consist of at least four people. Members of the group discuss their personal opinions about issues that relate to work or environmental processes. Collect qualitative data, which explains the preferences and ideas or belief of the group members. This information is another strategy of indirect evaluation which supports the evaluation of a process.

4
Analyze documentation of perceptions about student mastery of learning outcomes. This type of indirect evaluation is conducted in an educational environment. The process that must be evaluated in this particular situation is mastery of learning outcomes. This is done by collecting self-analysis -- conclusions or reporting based on a student's actual findings or perceptions as well as perceptions of alumni, faculty and employers. Then, these reports must be reviewed for determination of the successfulness of processes that lead to mastery of learning outcomes.

Measure operational data, such as temperature, pressure, flow and fluid pH. This type of indirect evaluation is conducted for pipeline corrosion. According to the Society for Experimental Mechanics, a mechanical device couples a pH sensitive hydrogel with an optical fiber containing brag grating. A Fiber Brag grating (FBG) is a component which is obtained by recording measurements of the refractive index -- the bending of light -- in the optical core. The measurements represent indirect evaluation required to evaluate the process of corrosion in pipelines.
