Propane tanks have a number of outdoor uses, such as supplying fuel for an outdoor gas grill or heating a camper or motor home. Propane tanks come with high-pressure and low-pressure regulators, depending on their uses, as well as adjustable or fixed-setting regulators. Fixed-pressure propane tanks have regulator adjustments to not only control the distribution of propane, but to also act as a safety barrier between the tank's high pressure and the appliance.
Things You'll Need
- Adjustable wrench
- Flat-head screwdriver
Check the regulator housing for either a regulator spring (white colored for propane), a regulator adjustment screw and a regulator seal cap for furnaces or a regulator screw and nut on smaller appliances.
Turn the regulator shut-off valve until it closes. Fixed-pressure propane tanks will have an inline ball valve (lever valve) or needle control valve (turn valve) for shutting off the line leading to the appliance. Remove the regulator seal cap, or use an adjustable wrench to loosen the regulator adjustment nut by turning it counterclockwise.
Adjust gas pressure by placing a flat-head screwdriver on the adjustment screw. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to increase pressure or counterclockwise to decrease the pressure. Monitor for the desired pressure on the output pressure gauge. Replace the seal cap or tighten the regulator nut. Open the regulator's shut-off valve.
