1
Avoid washing your hair prior to styling it. The extra oils in your hair help pins and clips stay in place, which extends the life of your hairstyle.
-
2
Brush your hair to remove any tangles or knots.
-
-
3
Apply smoothing cream to your hair, working it down to the ends.
-
4
Use a curling iron or curlers to smooth out your hair, creating a soft body throughout. Work section by section until you have smoothed and/or curled all of your hair.
-
5
Gather a small section of hair above your forehead that you want as your front poof. Smooth this section out by gently fingering the hair. Twist this section of hair once, and press it down with your middle or index finger. Gently push your finger forward in the direction of your forehead, creating a slight poof in this section of hair. Slide a bobby pin in the same direction in order to anchor the poof. Add another bobby pin if you need more stability. Spray generously with hairspray. For additional volume, gently pull hair up from the pin(s) and spray with hairspray.

Pull the remainder of your hair in your hands as if you are going to make a ponytail. But instead of a ponytail, twist your hair and flip it up. Use a hair clip to secure the long twist to your scalp, about halfway up the back of your head. Pieces of hair will extend over the top of the clip. Finger the hair, then arrange it on top of your head and over the clip to hide it. Use a curling iron to recurl any ends, and tuck in with bobby pins as needed.

7
Apply a generous amount of hairspray all over your hair to hold the style.

Tips & Warnings
Wear a button-down shirt when styling your hair so that you do not risk pulling any pins out while changing from your shirt to your dress clothes.
If your hair is not long enough for an updo, simply go with the poof. Secure it with pins and a jeweled barrette, if desired.
Other updo options include a French twist or a bun, which you can achieve by twisting and pinning your hair with bobby pins.
