How to Remove the Screen Section from a Storm Door

Adding a storm door in addition to a main door enables you to increase air ventilation during warm weather thanks to the screen panel in the storm door. When the weather becomes cold, you can remove the screen section from a storm door and replace it with a glass section that will cut the wind and help insulate your door. Use caution as you make the switch between screen and glass to prevent damage to the door. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the frame retainer pieces that surround the screen on all four sides. These retainers are generally made of vinyl and you should be able to pull them gently out of place with your fingers to remove them. Start on one end of the top of the window screen and work your way across, loosening as you go to remove the retainer. Set the retainer aside carefully and then remove the right- or left-edge retainer. Have an assistant hold the screen in place while you remove the retainer from the fourth side to prevent the screen from falling out.

Install the glass section into the opening. Fit the bottom edge of the glass into the opening first and push it down into the opening as far as possible to ensure the window fits into the space properly. Fit the entire window into the space and ask your assistant to hold it in place.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check specific instructions for your screen door to ensure you remove the screen properly.

  • If you have trouble removing the retainers, try wrapping the tip of a flat-head screwdriver with electrical tape to prevent it from scratching the retainers or the door and using the tip of the screwdriver to loosen the retainers.

  • Lubricating the flange area of the retainers may help you insert the retainers back into place. Rub bar soap along the flange edge of the retainers.

  • Be careful with the vinyl retainers as you remove them and then replace them into the door. You can easily bend and crack the retainers, making them unusable.
