How to Write a Basic Book Report

A basic book report is just a plot summary of the book. Rather than analyze deeper themes, characters' intentions, or other more complex elements of the book, a basic book report simply summarizes the plot in a clear, concise manner, informing readers who the main characters are, what the main plot elements are and whether the book is worth reading or not.

Instructions

    • 1

Jot down the basic plot elements. These include who the characters are, what they want, why they need it and how they get it. Essentially all books can be boiled down to these basic elements, as characters need to be pursuing something to move a plot forward.

    • 2

Jot down your opinion of the book. A book report is partly plot summary, but it is also an opportunity for you to explain why you did or did not like the book. So, you need to have a clear understanding of what you think of the book and why.

    • 3

Develop a thesis that consists of your opinion of the book.

    • 4

Write an outline for your book report. Each section of the outline will be a paragraph in the report, and each one should respond to your thesis statement (which is your opinion of the book) through examples.

    • 5

Write your book report from your outline, expanding each point you made in the outline from short point form to discursive paragraph form.

    • 6

Edit your draft for grammar, style and readability and turn it in.
