How to Write a Satire Story

The basic definition of satire is a written or performed parody. Satire often includes humorous criticisms of an institution by mimicking. Satire most commonly comes in the form of a play or story. A satirical story relies on sarcasm and exaggeration for its humor. Some colleges across the United States allow creative writing degrees to focus on satire. Satirical writing is also used in newspaper editorials to point out current events that have humorous overtones.

  • Write down a list of current topics that would could be parodied or mimicked. Show the list to friends, relatives and co-workers. Ask for feedback.

  • Brainstorm ideas for the topic. Write down any type of common problem with the idea, oddity, or pun that can be at the topic's expense. Write a first draft of the satire by writing a review of the topic, or a mimic of the institution.

  • Re-read the satire article several times. Be critical, and write the best piece possible before showing it to audiences or editors.
