Loafers are shoes without laces -- you simply slip your feet inside and off you go. The material can be canvas, leather or other man-made materials and the design will vary. Penny loafers, moccasins and deck shoes are three common styles. Don't allow dirt or scuff marks to keep you from wearing your white loafers; give them a gentle cleaning to remove the unsightly marks and you can still put your best foot forward.
Things You'll Need
- Dry, soft cloths
- Hand soap
- Saddle soap
- Leather conditioner
- Leather protection spray
Canvas or Man-Made Material
Brush or wipe off surface dirt with a dry, soft cloth. Check the area between the sole and the shoe for dirt that is trapped. Use a toothbrush to remove stuck dirt.
Dampen another cloth and apply a small amount of hand soap to a corner of the cloth. Select a soap that does not contain added lotions or scents.
Rub the dirt spot in a circular motion with the soapy cloth. Rinse the dirt from the cloth and check the spot. Keep rubbing the spot with the soapy cloth until the stain is gone.
Gently remove any remaining soap with a clean, damp cloth.
Stuff the canvas shoes with cloth to retain their shape and set in a sunny spot to dry.
Remove surface dirt with a dry, soft cloth. This will prevent more dirt from being rubbed into the white leather loafer while cleaning.
Clean marks with saddle soap applied to a damp cloth. Gently rub the mark until it is removed.
Apply a leather conditioner to the clean loafer and allow it to dry. The conditioner will keep the leather supple.
Spray the dry leather loafer with a leather protective spray. The spray will provide a thin coating to prevent water from penetrating the leather.
