Sugar junkies unite! It is time to demand soda tapped fresh and homemade from a system in your own fridge. You don't have to visit a convenience store or steal the equipment from an old fashioned malt shop to dispense your own sugary drink. Most large towns have a home brewing store or, if you live in a rural community, the soda equipment can be purchased on the Internet. With the right gear and a little effort, you'll be sipping soda in no time.
Things You'll Need
- Cornelius 5 gallon soda keg
- 3 feet gas tubing
- 20 feet keg line
- Picnic tap
- 4 hose clamps
- Ball lock line-out quick connect
- Ball lock line-in quick connect
- Flat-head screwdriver
- CO2 regulator
- C02 tank
- Soda extract kit
Mix your soda extract kit according to the directions. Usually this can be done by simply boiling water and adding table sugar and the contents of the extract bottle. Homemade recipes are readily available online.
Pour your soda carefully into a clean and sanitized Cornelius keg.
Connect one end of the keg line onto the barb from the black ball lock valve and thread two hose clamps onto the line. On the opposite end of your keg line, insert the picnic tap. Tighten hose clamps on both ends with a flat head screwdriver.
Connect one end of the gas line onto the barb from the gray ball lock valve and thread two hose clamps onto the line. On the opposite end of the gas line, insert the barb from the CO2 regulator. Tighten hose clamps on both ends with your flat head screwdriver.
Press down the gray ball lock valve onto the in-post on top of your Cornelius keg; it will lock into place. Do the same for the black ball lock valve on the out-post.
Open the valve on the C02 regulator and adjust the pressure to 28 PSI. Soda takes a week or so to carbonate. If it is carbonating too slowly, give the keg a shake every few days in order to speed up the process.
Refrigerate as needed. An old refrigerator with the shelves removed, for example, serves as perfect cooling device.
Tips & Warnings
- A longer line -- 20 feet is preferable -- to dispense the soda helps with improving the flow of the liquid. The line can be rolled up to keep it out of the way when not is use.
