How to Make a Squiggly Knitted Scarf

A squiggly scarf is made from a particular brand of yarn manufactured by Crystal Palace called Squiggle. It is a variety of eyelash yarn that is quite thin and usually worked with in multiple strands or in combination with another novelty yarn. If used alone on needles size 13 or larger it creates a very lacy effect. Any scarf with this yarn, whether made with just Squiggle yarn or combined with another yarn, is referred to as a squiggly scarf.

Things You'll Need

  • Squiggle yarn
  • Additional yarn (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Choose your preferred color of Squiggle yarn and purchase 1 or 2 balls depending on whether you want your scarf to be an average of 6 foot long or if you want a longer scarf. If you want to combine it with another type of yarn, purchase enough to equal the Squiggle yarn in yardage per ball or skein. Complicated stitch patterns are not necessary; with "eyelash" yarns it is the yarn, not the stitch that stands out.

Use a larger need for your first project until you get used to working with this thin, wispy yarn. A size 11 or larger needle will be easier to work with. Complete a gauge swatch by casting on 10 stitches and knitting every row for 10 rows. Measure the width (inches) of the swatch and divide that number into 10. This will determine your gauge. For example, if the swatch is 2 inches wide, then your gauge is 5 stitches per inch. Gauge swatches are imperative for exact width as every knitter has slightly different tension and different stitch sizes.

    • 3

Decide how wide you want the scarf to be and cast on the number of stitches it will require to get that width. For example, if the scarf will be 6 inches wide and your gauge was 5 stitches per inch, cast on 30 stitches.

Knit every row until you reach the desired length. Bind off. Weave in ends.

Tips & Warnings

  • After you become accustomed to working with Squiggles yarn, you can experiment by pairing it with different yarns and using different stitch patterns. Just be sure you complete your gauge swatch for every combination of yarn and every stitch pattern to ensure the size desired.
