Molecular biology and biological informatics data are stored in a specific file formats.

Molecular biology and biological informatics data are stored in a specific file formats. EMBL (European Molecular Biology Laboratory) database and FASTA text file use different formats for encoding nucleotide and peptide sequences with the single-letter codes. The online sequence format converters allow transfer of information from EBML database to the FASTA file format. The FASTA format includes the ability to add sequence names and comments to precede the sequences.

Instructions

    • 1

Start an online sequence converter on a computer (see Resources). The online sequence converters options include Gene Infinity EMBL to FASTA, Bioinformatics Box Sequence Format Converter and Sequence Manipulation Suite converter.

    • 2

Paste or upload the content of one or more EMBL files into the text area of the converter. Depending on the converter you use, click "Submit" or "Convert" button.

    • 3

Open Windows Notepad. Right-click in the text area of the converter, choose "Select All" in the shortcut menu, right-click again and choose "Copy". Click "Edit" and then click "Paste" in the Notepad window. Click "File", "Save" to save the data, converted to FASTA format.
