1
Choose pots that fit the space you will be gardening in. Terracotta pots allow excess moisture to evaporate from the soil but are heavier. Plastic pots are light and easy to move but don't breathe like terracotta. Alternately, use other containers like clean buckets or barrels.

2
Pick plants that are suitable for growing in containers. Many types of vegetables and some fruit are suitable for growing in containers. Most flowers and greenery can also be grown on a balcony. Choose smaller varieties of plants that don't need as much room to grow.

3
Poke holes in the bottom of the container if it doesn't already have them. Add a layer of rocks to allow the soil to drain. This is particularly important in container gardening because the water can't drain down into the earth like in a regular garden. Add soil and compost that are suitable to the plant you are growing.

4
Plant seedlings in the pot by digging a hole large enough to bury the roots without covering the stem. Place the seedling in the hole and cover it loosely with dirt.
-
5
Water plants daily to keep them from drying out. The entire container is out in the elements, so the plants are more susceptible to drying out.
