How to Obtain Chinese Citizenship


As China's economic strength continues to grow, so will the country's cache as a destination. And as more folks visit, some will want to stay. Obtaining Chinese Citizenship can be an arduous process, as is the case in any country, but the government does offer a path to citizenship. For those who do obtain citizenship, the benefits include visa-free travel, access to government jobs, social welfare benefits, real estate ownership and a future child's citizenship acquisition.

  • Determine if you qualify to obtain Chinese Citizenship. The Nationality Law of the People's Republic of China provides multiple situations in which a foreign-born resident may acquire Chinese citizenship. Among some of the basic conditions, you must either have settled in China, have close relatives who are Chinese nationals or have other legitimate reasons.

  • Visit a Public Security Bureau office in China, a Chinese embassy or a consular office to receive an application for citizenship. You can also download an application form on the Chinese Central Government's official website and print it out. Among other requirements, you need to provide multiple documents of identification and proof of qualification for citizenship.

  • Submit the application in person at one of the government offices already mentioned. The Ministry of Public Security will process your application and reject or approve your request.

  • Receive a certificate of citizenship when approved. You now have the same rights as people who acquired Chinese citizenship and nationality at birth. You must renounce your original nationality when you acquire Chinese citizenship. The government does not allow dual citizenship.
