A Dish Network remote control allows you to control not only your Dish Network equipment, but your entire home entertainment center by programming the remote to your different devices. You will occasionally need to replace the remote's batteries when they drain. Sometimes, the remote may be unresponsive after you replace the batteries, so you'll need to troubleshoot the remote.

Step 1

Press the function mode button at the top of the remote that corresponds to the device you are trying to control. For instance, if you are no longer able to control your TV after installing the new batteries, press the "TV" button at the top of the remote to set it into TV-control mode. You should see the "TV" button light up red and then go out. Try the remote controls again to see if this has resolved the issue.

Step 2

Reprogram the remote to the device it is no longer able to function. This process can vary slightly depending on which Dish remote model you use, but in general, for most Dish IR (Infrared) remotes, hold down the function button of the device you are trying to program for a few seconds until all the other function buttons light up once and go dark. Enter in the 3-digit code that corresponds to the device you are trying to program (the same code that you would have used to program the device originally; see Resources if you do not know the code) followed by the "pound" key. If you see all the function buttons flash once, the remote recognizes the code and you can test the programming by pressing the "power" button and seeing if the TV turns off. If not, some further troubleshooting is required.

Step 3

Install new batteries to see if the new batteries you installed were factory duds. If there is still no response from the remote, try the above troubleshooting steps again. If the remote at this point still does not control one or more of the devices in your home entertainment center, contact Dish Network regarding a replacement remote.
