A pulley system is used to help lift heavy objects by cutting the required force required to lift the object. The pulley system uses pulley wheels and a rope to achieve the job of lifting a heavy object. One end of the rope is secured to the heavy object. The opposite end of the rope is placed around a pulley and hangs on the opposite side to pull. You can make a miniature pulley at home from household items.
Things You'll Need
- 2 metal bottle caps
- Hot glue gun
- Hot glue sticks
- 1/8-inch drill bit
- Drill press
- 8- to 12-gauge wire
- Wire cutters
- Packaging string
- Paper clip
- 2 bottles with corks
Place a metal bottle cap on a flat surface so the ribbed edge is on the bottom. Place a pencil eraser-sized drop of hot glue in the center of the cap. Position the second metal bottle cap over the top of the glued bottle cap. Turn the cap so the ribbed edge is up. Press the two bottle caps together to secure. Allow the glue to dry.
Place the glued metal caps under a drill press. Line up the 1/8-inch drill bit to the center of the caps. Slowly drill through the two caps and the glue.
Cut a piece of 8 to 12-gauge wire 18 inches long. Slide the end of the wire through the hole in the middle of the bottle caps. Place the wire on a flat surface so it is on a horizontal plain. Measure in 3 inches from one wire end. Bend the wire down at the 3-inch mark and make a 90 degree angle. Repeat the process with the left end of the wire so it is parallel with the first bent section.
Sit the two corked bottles in an upright position so they are side-by-side. Move the bottles 12 inches apart. Pick up the bent wire with the metal bottle caps and position it so the 90 degree angle bends are pointing down. Insert 1-inch of each wire into the corks on the top of the bottles. The wire is held in place between the two bottles. Slide the metal bottle caps to the center of the wire.
Cut a length of packaging string 18- nches long. Tie a small paper clip to one end of the string.
Place the fold of the string inbetween the two edges of the metal bottle caps. Pull the string without the paperclip far enough so the paper clip is dangling from the end of the string. The miniature pulley is now ready for use.
