How to Find a Home in Inwood, New York
Inwood is a small village on the western end of Long Island. While it may sound quaint, keep in mind that the community is located just outside of Queens and is encompassed by Hempstead, the most populated town in New York State. Inwood's suburban nature, racial diversity and proximity to New York City and the Atlantic ocean make it a desirable place to live. Another thing to keep in mind: 47 percent of the homes in Inwood are owner-occupied and the community is among the poorest in Nassau County, according to Long Island Exchange. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Drive to Inwood and take a look at the community. The benefit to shopping for homes in Long Island is that the individual communities, though densely populated, are fairly small geographically. If you have a good map it won't take you long to drive down most of the streets in the hamlet of Inwood to see which homes are advertised for sale. Plus, it's important to determine if a neighboring community would not be a better fit for you. Keep an eye out for "For Sale by Owner" signs.

2
Stop by a real estate office within the hamlet's limits, or one in a neighboring community that has homes listed in Inwood. By visiting in-person, especially on a weekend, realtors may be available to show some of the homes the same day. Moreover, small independent realtors don't always participate in Multiple Listing Services (MLS) where shoppers can browse online, so never assume every available home is advertised somewhere online. Realtors can provide a print-out of the homes they are listing, and can make an appointment to show it another day if they can't accommodate you on the spot.

Check listed homes on realtor sites like HomeFinder.com, Trulia.com and MLSLI.com (Multiple Listing Service of Long Island). These sites may have listings that you didn't see during your drive around the community. You can tailor your search by price range, home size and house features. If you don't have a time limit for buying a home, check the sites periodically to see if prices are increasing or decreasing.
