How to Remove & Replace Headers on a 1990 Volvo
A 1990 Volvo has an exhaust manifold (also called headers) mounted to the cylinder head of the engine. Their job is to send the gasses in the head out through the exhaust, where it exits out of the tailpipe. If you ever find a crack in a header, then you need to replace it with a new one so that you don't have an exhaust leak. This should take approximately an hour to do properly.
Things You'll Need
- 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and socket set
- Open-end wrench set
- Replacement header
- Replacement header gasket
- 3/8-inch torque wrench

1
Pop the hood and allow the engine to cool off if the Volvo has been run in the previous two to three hours. Unbolt the air cleaner and air cleaner hoses from the engine with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and move them out of the way.

2
Unbolt the EGR valve pip from the header with an open-end wrench. Unbolt the turbo from the header with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets, then unbolt the header from the cylinder heat with the ratchet. Pull the header and exhaust manifold away from the engine.

Install a replacement gasket onto the engine block and install the replacement header onto the engine with the 3/8-inch ratchet, extension and sockets. Bolt the turbo and EGR pipe to the header with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket.

4
Torque the header bolts onto the cylinder head to 10-20 ft/lbs using the 3/8-inch torque wrench. Reinstall the air cleaner and hoses with the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket. Start the Volvo and listen for any exhaust leaks.
