1
Go to the main control panel for your pool system and turn off all electrical components. If you have a pool heater and it was previously running, wait ten minutes before proceeding.
-
2
Locate the main pool valve and the skimmer valve which are typically located near the control panel. Turn the valves until they are closed, thus preventing water from entering the system.
-
-
3
Pull the front cover off the pool pump. Some pump covers lift off from the top.
-
4
Look inside the pump housing and locate the basket which is typically white and located near the front or the top of the unit. It will most likely also contain debris in it.
-
5
Pull the pump basket straight up to remove it and dump out any debris. Spray the basket thoroughly with a garden hose until it is completely clean.
-
6
Turn the basket so that the cupped side faces upward and re-insert it into the top of the pump housing. Replace the top or front cover on the housing.
-
7
Turn on the valve for the main drain and then restart all electrical components at the main control panel.
-
8
Wait until you hear the pump start up and then turn the skimmer valve to the open position.
