How to Use English Letters to Write Russian Words

If you are writing a Russian correspondent online then you will likely need to write Russian words. The Russian alphabet is based upon and naturally similar to the Cyrillic alphabet (an alphabet developed in Bulgaria and used in the East throughout Asia). So to write Russian words you need to use the Russian alphabet. With an English keyboard this may seem difficult to accomplish, but in fact there are various virtual Russian keyboards available online. These allow you to type Russian words using the English keys on your keyboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your preferred web browser and go to a Russian keyboard website such as Apronus, Winrus or TypeIt (see Resources).

    • 2

Click in the main text box.

    • 3

Begin typing, and you will notice that the Russian characters are replacing your English keys. Once you have finished typing you can copy and paste your message in an email to send to a Russian recipient.

Yes, all three are modern as they allow to use a regular keyboard - I saw zillion times as users of older mouse-based virtual keyboard complained that it's too tedious and hard to type using mouse. But one would be enough here :) Really - please see below. Apronus and TypeIt are very different - one offers only Standard layout, second - only Phonetic layout AND their developers did not do what I did for my :) WinRus keyboard - I asked (on several forums) to try my virtual keyboard and provide feedback/suggestions. As a result, my WinRus keyboard has _all the same_ as BOTH others have plus it does not have the deficiencies which other two have (thanks to my users input): 1) Apronus. Only Standard layout which many just do not know and as they say "spend too much time looking for needed letter" (mine has both Standard and Phonetic layouts) - plus Apronus makes this even harder...
