How to Glue Level Beams Together
Increasing the thickness or size of a wood beam is done by connecting two level beams together. This makes the beam stronger and able to support more weight when using it as a header for a wall. To do this, you need to use a fastener for the wood and then use glue to keep the two sections of beam together. However, you need to first obtain the materials for the project at a local home improvement store.

Instructions
-
-
1
Examine each beam to see if there are any nicks, burrs or residue that will prevent a joint in the wood.
-
2
Place a level on each beam that you want to connect to verify that they are level.
-
-
3
Set the two beams side by side on the ground. Adjust the beams so the grain of the wood is pointing in the same direction.
-
4
Sand the top of each beam with the sandpaper to remove any surface material from the beams. Clean the beam with a clean cloth.
-
5
Measure the length of each beam with the tape measure. Mark the beams every 8 to 10 inches with the pencil. Drill a 1-inch hole on each mark with the power drill.
-
6
Apply wood glue to the top of each beam and spread the glue evenly with the paint brush. Insert the dowels into the holes and then set the two beams together. Secure the dowels by tapping on the beams with a wooden mallet.
-
7
Attach clamps to the beams to keep them secure until the glue dries. Wipe off any excess glue with a damp cloth.
