A humidifier is necessary for anyone living in cold climates. Without the use of a humidifier, the air inside your home will become very dry. Dry air causes your nasal passages and skin to significantly dry out, which could cause you to become more susceptible to illness. Cool mist humidifiers are recommended for use in your home, although you cannot always see the mist that the humidifier is emitting. There are a few ways to determine whether or not your humidifier is emitting the moisture you require.
Step 1
Watch the water level in the tank. If the water level drops at a decent rate each day, you can be assured that your humidifier is putting moisture in the air.

Place a humidity gauge in the same room as the humidifier. Read the gauge a few times each day to make sure the humidifier is keeping the room at a comfortable humidity level of between 40 percent to 50 percent.
Step 3
Place your hand over the vent of your humidifier, where the air is pushed out. Feeling a cool breeze means that the humidifier is sucking air in and pushing it out through the wet filter and sending moisture into the air.
