How to Make Your Own Clasp With a Toggle & Button
A clasp is a type of fastener with two interlocking parts that holds two objects together. You can use a clasp made from a flat toggle and button on fabrics where you do not want to make or use a button hole, such as stretchy fabrics or very thick knits. A flat toggle whose edge will fit under the button will work best for this type of clasp. Experiment with same or different colored toggles, buttons, cord and leather to determine which ones will work best for your project. Does this Spark an idea?

- 4-inch cord
- 2 leather triangles with 2-inch bases
- Fabric glue
- Garment
- Measuring tape
- Straight pins
- Sewing machine
- Scissors
- Thread
- Needle

Thread the cord down through the surface holes on the flat toggle so that the cord ends come out evenly on the underside of the toggle.

Apply fabric glue to the backsides of both triangles. Sandwich about 1/2 inch of the toggle's cord ends between the leather triangles, and press the sides together. Let the fabric glue dry completely.

Spread your garment out on a flat surface. Use a measuring tape and straight pins to mark where the toggle and button should be sewn on either side of the garment. Sew the button onto the garment with thread and a sewing needle, and remove the straight pin marker.

Turn the bases of the triangles so that they are perpendicular to the hem of the garment. Use a sewing machine to securely fasten the leather part of the toggle to the garment. Remove the straight pin marker.

Slide the loop made by the cord over the button, and place the flat toggle edge beneath the far side of the button to close the clasp.

Tips & Warnings
A sewing machine can sew stitches with more even tension than is produced by hand sewing, leaving your garment free from puckers and wrinkles on the toggle side.
