DIY Ribbons

DIY Ribbons thumbnail
Commercial ribbon is woven with a continuous weft thread to prevent fraying.

Ribbons are one of the oldest recorded forms of worn ornament. They were used to adorn Egyptian tunics, Roman togas and the finery of European nobility. Aside from simple borders and collars, ribbons have been used to create 3-dimensional designs, such as flowers and bows, button loops and drawstrings. With no limitation to the width, thickness, length or style of ribbon, it is easy to create a unique craft or accessory.

Instructions

    • 1

      Iron the fabric.

    • 2

Measure and cut a strip of cloth the width and length of the desired ribbon.

    • 3

Sew a zigzag stitch along the edge of the material. Use a serger instead if you have one.

    • 4

Roll the material around an empty thread spool.

    • 5

Tack the end down with a pin to keep the ribbon from unraveling.

Tips & Warnings

  • Weave your own ribbons for a polished material that won't fray on the sides. Use a thick gauge yarn, such as a bulky weight grade, to speed up the weaving process.

  • Avoid using a zigzag stitch on synthetic fabrics by melting the raw edges over an open flame. Fabric may also be dipped in glue to seal the edges and eliminate the need for the zigzag border.
